Getting these figures right isn’t just a good idea; it’s crucial!
Let’s start by understanding your vehicle’s weight. [ TARE WEIGHT – THE FIGURE ADVERTISED BY THE MANUFACTURER WHICH IS USED BY THE GOVERNMENT TO RELEASE TO MARKET. BARE BONES VEHICLE WITH MINIMUM FLUIDS AND MAX 10L FUEL, THIS WEIGHT IS ALMOST NEVER ACHEIVABLE IN THE REAL WORLD]. Kerb weight is the mass of the vehicle with a full tank of fuel, all fluids in the engine and driveline, and any factory options it comes with. In simple terms, it’s the car exactly as you’d find it when you pick it up from the showroom. [ KERB WEIGHT IS OFTEN REFERRED TO AS UNLADEN MASS AND IS THE WEIGHT OF THE VEHICLE BEFORE ANY ADDITIONAL LOADS SUCH AS GOODS, PASSENGERS OR LUGGAGE ARE ADDED]
Now, hold ya horses! Before you start slapping on the latest, toughest Bullbar, throwing that big box (OR CANOPY) on the back OF YOUR CUSTOM REAR TRAY, and hitching up your 3.5 tonne caravan, just remember, adding all that gear will chew up your Payload. [ PAYLOAD IS THE DIFFERENCE IN MASS BETWEEN THE VEHICLES RATED – GROSS VEHICLE MASS AND THE UNLADEN MASS] And that (Getting this wrong) could land you in some long unpaid leave behind bars, plus a missed call from your insurance company ready to drop you quicker than a toddler holding ice cream.

Weight and understanding where it goes!
What is GVM?
GVM (Gross Vehicle Mass) is the maximum allowed weight of your vehicle, and it includes everything from accessories like Bull bars, Awnings, and larger wheel/tyres. Down to even the little things like water, fuel, Eskys, people, dogs, and all your camping gear.
It’s all determined by manufacturers working in conjunction with the Australian Design Rules to ensure the vehicle meets all applicable safety standards for use on, and off Aussie roads. Ignoring these weight restrictions can render your vehicle uninsurable and likely to land you in a lot of scalding water in the event of an accident.
Another commonly overlooked weight is the trailer (if towing), specifically the tow ball weight. This is also included in the vehicle’s GVM. This additional weight is transferred to the vehicle, putting that load on the chassis and rear axle. [towball mass is generally around 10% of the trailer mass, which for a 3500kg trailer or caravan gives us up to 350kg of mass that needs to be taken from the vehicles overall GVM]
What is Payload?
Payload refers to the amount of weight you can legally add to your 4WD, and it's calculated by subtracting the vehicle's kerb weight from its GVM rating. Essentially, everything bolted to, sitting in, or being carried by your vehicle, it all counts as part of the payload. So, whether it’s camping gear, spare tyres, or even those fluffy dice hanging from your rearview mirror, it all adds up and reduces the available payload.
A common misunderstanding also happens when a car salesperson slaps the tub and sings out "800kg payload, on this beauty!". This figure isn't concentrated in one area, it’s the total weight the vehicle can carry, spread out across the entire vehicle, from front to rear. It's also crucial to remember that the axles have their own weight rating, which we’ll get into next.
What is Axle load?
Axle load limits are the maximum weight that each axle of your vehicle is designed to safely carry.
Just like the vehicles chassis, they also have a limit. Each axle on a vehicle has a specific load rating, which is determined by the manufacturer. It’s essential to be aware of these limits, especially when towing or loading your 4WD, it’s not just about staying within the vehicle's overall GVM (Gross Vehicle Mass). You also need to ensure that the load is properly distributed across the front and rear axles to avoid exceeding their individual load limits. This information sometimes is overlooked but can be found in the vehicle manufacturers specs.
What is GCM (Gross Combined Mass)?
GCM (Gross Combination Mass) refers to the total weight of your vehicle, including any trailer or load its towing. Apart from heavy vehicle such as trucks with above 4.5t GVM’s, this figure is set by the manufacturer, and exceeding the GCM can land you in a lot of trouble [trying to claim manufacturer warranties], especially when towing heavy loads. If you’re planning a trip or deciding what to tow, it’s crucial to consider both your vehicle’s GVM (Gross Vehicle Mass) and the trailer’s GTM (Gross Trailer Mass), as the combined total should never exceed the vehicle manufacturers stated GCM.
Let’s use a new PY Ford Ranger as an example. The base 4x4 model has a GVM of 3,230kg and a GCM of 6,200kg. This means the combined weight of the vehicle and trailer must never exceed 6,200kg, even if the vehicle itself is under its GVM limit.
To calculate what you can safely tow, you subtract the vehicle’s GVM from the GCM:
6,200kg – 3,230kg = 2,970kg
So, if you load the Ranger to its factory GVM of 3,230kg, it can only tow 2,970kg. Regardless of the vehicle's advertised 3,500kg BTC (Braked Towing Capacity). This is why it’s important to understand the relationship between these figures when towing.
GVM Calculator: Understanding Your Limits
Let’s use another vehicle as an example of how quickly you can exceed all these weights.
Let’s say you have a brand new 2024 dual-cab HiLux SR with a GVM of 3100kg and a Kerb Weight of 2055kg, this would make you allowed payload 1045kg. (Remember this has to be distributed between the front and rear based on the Axle Load Limits)
Let’s start your dream build:
• Steel Bullbar – +80kg
• Steel Sliders – +50kg
• Winch – +30kg
• Long Range fuel tank (with the extra fuel) – +150kg
• Canopy – +70kg
• Drawers – +50kg
• 70L Fridge (loaded) – +60kg
• 4x Passengers (1 driver, 1 passenger, 2 teenage kids) – +280kg
• Roof Rack – +40kg
• Upgraded Suspension – +80kg
• Snorkel, Driving Lights, Water Jerry’s – +80kg
• Larger Tyres – +20kg
• Dual Battery System – +30kg
Total: 1020kg
That leaves you 25kg of Payload left to work with, and you haven’t even hooked on that brand new 2.5T trailer with a ball weight of 200kg.
Obviously not everyone will have all the above, but you can see how easily GVM can be reached and exceeded without too much effort.

What Does BTC Mean?
BTC (Braked Towing Capacity) is the maximum allowable towable weight your vehicle can handle; it also must have its own braking system fitted.
Keep in mind that trailers also have ATM (Aggregate Trailer Mass) which is essentially a GVM for the trailer (The total allowed mass of the trailer and its load, including the downwards force acting on the tow vehicle). Just like your vehicle’s GVM, exceeding this capacity will render your trailer uninsurable and illegal. If you’re pulled over by a weight inspection station while over ATM, expect your wallet to be well under its GVM!

The relationship between GVM, GCM and BTC!
The biggest mistake most people make is not realising how closely linked GVM, GCM and BTC are. All the above examples show that the more weight you add onto the vehicle, will slowly creep you closer to your GVM (Gross Vehicle Mass) and this can quickly decrease you BTC (Braked Towing Capacity) as they both must be calculated within the GCM (Gross Combined Mass) figure.
