GLOSSARY

Whether you are new to 4WD's, or a seasoned veteran, there are terms used that you may not be familiar with. So we put together a list of terms that will hopefully help understand these words thrown around here and there.

15 QUESTIONS
A drivetrain system that delivers engine power to only two wheels, either the front or rear axle. While suitable for everyday road driving, a 2WD vehicle generally offers significantly less traction than a 4WD when driving on loose, uneven or slippery terrain.
A drivetrain system that delivers power to both the front and rear axles, providing improved traction in off-road conditions. Most modern 4WD vehicles feature either a part-time or full-time four-wheel drive system and are designed to tackle challenging terrain including mud, sand, rocks and steep inclines.
A four-wheel drive mode that provides power to both axles while maintaining normal road gearing. 4H is commonly used on gravel roads, wet conditions, sand and light off-road tracks where additional traction is required without sacrificing vehicle speed.
A low-range gearing mode that significantly increases torque while reducing vehicle speed. Low range is used for technical off-road driving, steep climbs and descents, deep mud, rock crawling, towing on difficult terrain and vehicle recovery situations.
A heavy-duty axle shaft configuration featuring thirty-five splines where the axle engages the differential side gear. Compared to factory spline counts, 35 spline axles provide substantially greater strength and are commonly used in heavily modified off-road vehicles running large tyres and differential lockers.
A remote reservoir shock absorber hose that allows the reservoir to be mounted in virtually any position around the shock body without restricting suspension movement or compromising hose routing.
Commonly referred to as a 2-inch lift, a 50mm suspension lift increases ride height to improve ground clearance, suspension travel and tyre clearance. It is one of the most popular lift heights for Australian touring and recreational four-wheel drives.
A heat-treated aluminium alloy widely used in premium suspension and steering components due to its excellent corrosion resistance, strength-to-weight ratio and machinability. Superior Engineering uses 6061-T6 aluminium in a range of precision CNC machined billet products.

An electric air compressor powered by a vehicle's 12-volt electrical system. Commonly used for inflating tyres after off-road driving, operating air lockers and supplying compressed air for accessories or workshop equipment.
An electrically powered recovery winch driven by a vehicle's 12-volt battery system. Mounted to the front or rear of a four-wheel drive, it is used to recover vehicles from difficult terrain such as mud, sand, rocks or steep inclines.
A twenty-four-volt electrical system commonly found in heavy-duty trucks, military vehicles and some commercial four-wheel drives. Accessories including winches and air compressors must be compatible with the vehicle's operating voltage.

27 QUESTIONS
An electronic braking safety system that prevents the wheels from locking during heavy braking. ABS helps maintain steering control and is integrated with many modern traction and stability control systems.
The combined weight of aftermarket accessories fitted to a vehicle, including bull bars, winches, roof racks, long-range fuel tanks, canopies and drawer systems. Accessory weight should always be considered when selecting suspension components.
A steering geometry principle that allows the inside front wheel to turn at a greater angle than the outside wheel during cornering. Correct Ackermann geometry improves handling and reduces tyre scrub.
A coilover suspension assembly that allows ride height, spring preload or damping characteristics to be adjusted to suit different vehicle loads or driving conditions.
A heavy-duty panhard rod with threaded adjustment used to re-centre a live axle after a suspension lift. It restores correct axle alignment and improves steering feel.
Replacement radius arms designed to restore caster angle and pinion angle after a suspension lift while increasing strength and suspension articulation.
A shock absorber that allows the damping force to be adjusted. Depending on the design, adjustments may include rebound, low-speed compression, high-speed compression or a combination of all three.
Replacement suspension components manufactured to improve ride quality, handling, load carrying capability, suspension travel or off-road performance compared to factory equipment.
An air-assisted suspension system using inflatable rubber bellows to support vehicle weight. Air bags assist with load levelling but do not legally increase GVM unless installed as part of an approved GVM Upgrade.
A device that compresses air for inflating tyres, operating air lockers, air tools or air suspension systems. Portable and permanently mounted compressors are commonly used in four-wheel drives.
The process of reducing tyre pressure before driving off-road. Lower tyre pressures increase the tyre's contact patch, improving traction and ride comfort on sand, rocks and corrugated tracks.
A selectable differential locker operated using compressed air. When engaged, both axle shafts are mechanically locked together to maximise traction.
The adjustment of a vehicle's steering and suspension geometry to achieve the correct caster, camber and toe settings. Proper alignment improves handling, tyre wear and steering performance.
A versatile tyre designed to provide balanced performance on sealed roads and off-road terrain. All-terrain tyres are popular for touring due to their combination of durability, traction and road comfort.
A belt-driven electrical generator that charges the vehicle's battery and supplies power to electrical accessories while the engine is running.
Suspension geometry designed to reduce the amount of front-end dive experienced during braking by controlling weight transfer through the suspension.
Also known as a sway bar, this suspension component connects the left and right sides of the suspension to reduce body roll during cornering.
The maximum angle a vehicle can approach an obstacle before the front bumper or chassis contacts the ground. Increasing suspension lift or fitting high-clearance barwork can improve the approach angle.
The amount of independent wheel movement available as the suspension travels over uneven terrain. Increased articulation helps maintain tyre contact and improves off-road traction.
A suspension system designed to maximise wheel travel while maintaining stability and control over rough terrain.
A shaft or assembly that transfers engine torque to the wheels. Live axles also support vehicle weight and house the differential.
The structural housing that supports the differential centre, axle shafts and wheel bearings. Heavy-duty axle housings provide increased strength for demanding off-road use.
A hardened steel shaft that transfers drive from the differential to the wheels.
A condition where torque causes a live axle housing to rotate under acceleration, commonly affecting leaf sprung vehicles. Excessive axle wrap can cause wheel hop and driveline wear.
A reinforcement welded or bolted to an axle housing to increase rigidity and reduce the risk of bending during heavy off-road use.
A differential that automatically locks when traction is lost without requiring driver input, then unlocks during normal cornering.
An auxiliary oil cooler designed to reduce automatic transmission fluid temperatures when towing, carrying heavy loads or driving in demanding off-road conditions.

A spherical pivot that connects steering and suspension components while allowing movement in multiple directions. Worn ball joints can cause poor steering response, suspension noise and uneven tyre wear.
A hydraulic valve located within some shock absorbers that helps control oil flow and damping characteristics during suspension movement.
The reinforced inner edge of a tyre that seals securely against the wheel rim.
A specialised wheel that mechanically clamps the tyre bead to the rim, preventing the tyre from separating when operating at very low tyre pressures. Commonly used in extreme off-road applications.

A flexible rubber sleeve used to protect steering racks, CV joints and suspension components from dirt, water and contaminants.
A solid block of aluminium that is CNC machined into a finished component. Billet components are known for their strength, precision and high-quality finish.
Precision CNC machined suspension control arms manufactured from billet aluminium to provide increased strength, reduced weight and improved suspension geometry.
Heavy-duty CNC machined radius arms designed to improve strength, suspension geometry and caster correction on lifted vehicles.
CNC machined sway bar extension blocks that relocate the sway bar to improve clearance for larger shock absorbers and suspension travel.
A lift achieved by fitting spacers between the body and chassis. A body lift increases tyre clearance without altering suspension geometry or axle ground clearance.
A rubber or polyurethane mounting that isolates the vehicle body from the chassis, reducing vibration and noise.
The leaning motion of a vehicle during cornering caused by weight transfer. Spring rates, sway bars and shock absorber tuning all influence body roll.
The arrangement and spacing of wheel stud holes on a wheel hub. Also referred to as the wheel's PCD.
The available space between engine components or suspension accessories and the underside of the bonnet.
The compressed air pressure produced by a turbocharger or supercharger above atmospheric pressure.
The distribution of braking force between the front and rear wheels. Correct brake bias improves braking stability and vehicle control.
A reduction in braking performance caused by excessive heat buildup within the braking system.
Hydraulic lines that carry brake fluid from the master cylinder to each brake caliper or wheel cylinder. Extended brake lines are commonly required on lifted vehicles.
The rotating disc that brake pads clamp against to slow or stop a vehicle.
A braking system modification designed to improve stopping performance through larger rotors, upgraded calipers, performance pads or braided brake lines.
A vent fitted to differentials, gearboxes and transfer cases that allows pressure equalisation while preventing oil leaks.
A kit used to relocate drivetrain breathers to a higher position, reducing the risk of water entering differentials, gearboxes or transfer cases during water crossings.
A protective bar fitted between the bull bar and side steps to protect the vehicle's guards and doors from trees, scrub and animal strikes.
A heavy-duty front protection bar designed to protect the front of a vehicle from animal strikes, improve recovery options and provide mounting points for accessories such as winches and driving lights.
A rubber, polyurethane or hydraulic component that limits suspension compression before metal-to-metal contact occurs, protecting suspension and shock absorber components.
Unwanted steering movement caused by changes in suspension geometry as the suspension moves through its travel.
A rubber or polyurethane component fitted between suspension parts to absorb vibration while allowing controlled movement.

An enclosed structure mounted over a ute tub to provide secure storage, weather protection and additional touring functionality.

An engineered suspension and compliance package that legally increases a vehicle's maximum Gross Vehicle Mass. A GVM Upgrade typically includes upgraded suspension components and must be certified in accordance with applicable regulations.
The process of verifying and correcting a vehicle's speedometer using GPS data following tyre size changes.

A front suspension design where each front wheel moves independently. IFS generally provides improved on-road comfort and handling while sacrificing some articulation compared to a live axle.
An Internal Floating Piston (IFP) shock absorber uses a floating piston to separate the shock oil from the nitrogen gas charge. This design reduces oil aeration, improves damping consistency and provides better heat management than conventional twin tube shock absorbers.
A component's ability to withstand sudden impacts without permanent deformation or failure.
A suspension system where each wheel moves independently of the opposite wheel, improving ride quality and handling.
