Did you know you could get a fine for unsecured loads!

So if you're driving a vehicle that is carrying a load, or even towing a trailer that is carrying a load, you have to make sure that the load is restrained properly.

How to carry a load safely? The following is a summary of the principles:

  1. Choose a suitable vehicle for your load.
  2. Position and place the load correctly so that it is secure.
  3. Use suitable restraint equipment for the load you are carrying. (e.g. SafeGuard Cargo Nets)
  4. Provide adequate load restraint which is in good condition.
  5. Use appropriate driving methods and check your load restraint immediately before leaving and during the trip.

The Load Restraint Guide says loads must be restrained to prevent unsafe movement during all conditions of operation. The load restraint system must therefore satisfy the following requirements:

  • The load should not become dislodged from the vehicle.
  • Any load movement should be limited, such that in all cases where movement occurs, the vehicle's stability and weight distribution cannot be adversely affected and the load cannot become dislodged from the vehicle.

For a copy of the Load Restraint Guide visit the National Transport Commission website. This guide outlines the best ways to restrain and cover different types of loads.
