Superior Engineering Shows You the Right Way to Select the Correct Shock Length

With so many shocks and suspension upgrades on the market, working out the right shock length for your 4WD can feel overwhelming. The truth is, while a lot of vehicles might look similar, no two setups are exactly the same. Subtle differences, like bump stop heights, swaybar disconnects, or even airbag helpers, can drastically change what shock travel is required. Choosing correctly is critical; the wrong length can not only limit performance but also risk damage to driveline and suspension components.

Why Shock Length Matters

Shocks control how your suspension compresses and extends. If your shocks are too short, they’ll bottom out and act like a bump stop, damaging internal valving. Too long, and you risk overextending brake lines, unseating coils, or binding CV joints. The goal is to maximise travel without compromising safety or component longevity.

On many IFS vehicles, you may be surprised to learn that the factory shock length is already very close to what the CVs, steering, and arms can safely handle. Claims of “massive travel gains” should be treated carefully unless the kit also includes the supporting hardware to deal with those new limits.

How to Measure Shock Travel

The most accurate way to determine shock length is to measure directly at the mounting points.

1. Flex the suspension: Safely max out suspension travel by compressing one side and extending the other. Use a flex ramp, a ditch, or controlled axle articulation.

2. Take measurements: Record the distance between the mounts (centre of bolt or stud) at both full compression and full extension.

3. Factor in clearance: Add 10–15mm to the compressed measurement so the shock never bottoms out before the bump stop.

For safety, never crawl under a vehicle that isn’t securely supported.

Things to Watch Out For

When testing collapsed length, check for:

  • Tyre-to-body or chassis interference
  • Leaf-spring overwrapping
  • Coil bind in coil-sprung setups
  • Link or arm contact under flex

When testing extended length, watch for:

  • Brake line overextension
  • Unsafe driveshaft or CV angles
  • Coil springs unseating (fit coil retainers if required)

For heavy axles in high-speed applications, limiting straps are strongly recommended. Most shocks are not built to handle the tensile forces at full droop under those conditions.

Matching Springs to Shocks

Shocks and springs work as a pair, and mismatching them can ruin ride quality. Some brands simply modify existing coils to create a “new” option, but properly designed springs, like Superior Engineering’s coils, are purpose-built for specific lift heights and matched to the shock range available for that lift. This ensures correct geometry, ride quality, and maximum usable travel.

Choosing the Right Shock

When selecting shocks:

  • Start with the shortest closed length that still clears the bump stops.
  • Prioritise shocks that fit your vehicle’s geometry rather than chasing travel figures.
  • Confirm open length doesn’t overextend suspension components.
  • For IFS rigs, be realistic about achievable gains without heavy modification.

In many cases, consulting a suspension specialist is the safest option. Shops with experience in long-travel kits can provide proven setups that balance travel, geometry, and durability.
